Temporomandibular joint disorder or TMJ disorder or simply TMJ is one of the most annoying medical conditions that any one of us can suffer from. It does not only affect the jaw joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull, it can also affect your back, ears, head, and neck when left untreated. The pain associated with TMJ can be so excruciating that it can affect and disrupt your breathing, eating, and sleep. A TMJ disorder can be caused by a lot of factors, including poor orthodontic work and natural shifting of the teeth. Some of the symptoms of this painful medical condition include clicking of the jaw, difficulty in opening and closing the mouth, jaw tightness, and jaw pain.

There are many ways to cure TMJ disorders. There are surgical ways and natural ways. There are also medications that help alleviate the pain felt by those suffering from TMJ. More recently, TMJ exercises have become popular remedies for TMJ pain. They do not require any monetary investment and they can be performed at any time of the time and in any comfortable place.

One of the most common TMJ exercises involves placing your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Try to open your mouth wide while keeping your mouth in place. Breathe in slowly for two counts then breathe out slowly for two counts as well. Release this position then repeat the whole process ten times. You can also take your fist and press it against the right side of your jaw, just below the hinge. Then, press your jaw against your fist as well and try to maintain a steady pressure. Holding this position for ten seconds should help relax your muscles. Release this position then repeat it ten times before doing the whole process with your other jaw.

Another exercise involves using your fingers to press your jaw on each side. Apply the same amount of pressure on both sides. Open your jaw slowly while not letting it click. Should your jaw click, release this position then start all over again, opening your mouth more slowly this time.

There are still many TMJ exercises that you can do for a few minutes each day in any place which you find comfortable. You can ask your doctor about these TMJ exercises and they can also show you how to properly perform them. You might need to do some of the exercises at least twice a day to have the best results, while there are also some that you can perform when needed.

Find Things that cause TMJ and learn more about treatment with online articles. Research as much as you can on TMJ disorder symptoms and stop living in pain from day to day. Too many people just accept TMJ as part of life, you don’t have to settle for that pain. Look into a cure today.

People don’t always know right away if they are suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ pain. They might notice some things, like a headache, a pain in their neck, aching shoulders among others, as well as some pain whenever they talk, eat, or open their mouth. But it won’t always register on them right away that they already have TMJ disorder. Only when they get themselves checked can they definitively find out that they are suffering from TMJ disorder.

Naturally, the next step that should follow is to find the right TMJ treatments for you. You can try to look for remedies you can do at home, initially, just to be able to figure out how you can ease the aches that you’re feeling. One of the first places you can turn to is the Internet, where there is a massive number of medical websites and web pages specializing in all things related to TMJ disorder. These websites don’t guarantee that you will be getting from them the proper diagnosis or even the most effective treatments, but you will learn more about the symptoms as well as the steps that you can take in order to deal with your TMJ disorder.

Whatever you find online is of course not a substitute for actual TMJ treatment. You will need to take more concrete action than simply taking painkillers or applying warm compress to the painful areas; you have to address your TMJ directly at the source. After taking a look at online resources for tips and advice, your next step should be to visit your physician. Your physician will not be the one handling your TMJ treatment, but will instead give you a quick check-up and refer you to any reliable dentists or dentists who specialize particularly in TMJ syndrome.

A dentist will be able to prescribe the right surgical appliance for you in case your TMJ disorder is caused by an uneven bite, while a TMJ specialist will be able to conduct more thorough examinations into your condition. Apart from prescribing mouth guards and medicine, a TMJ specialist can also offer biofeedback as part of your TMJ treatment in order to reduce your stress level, which tends to encourage teeth clenching. The TMJ specialist can also perform surgery on the affected joint for a more permanent cure.

There is currently still no board yet that certifies dentists as TMJ specialists, but you can still find a number of them that are deeply involved in providing TMJ treatments. Don’t forget to look up oral and maxillofacial surgeons as well.an also offer biofeedback as part of the treatment in order to reduce your stress level, which tends to encourage teeth clenching.

A persistent pain in the jaw area. Pain that goes all the way to your neck and around your shoulders. A ringing in your ears. Incredible pain when you open your mouth, accompanied by clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when you open and close your mouth. Any of these symptoms sound familiar to you? Then you most likely have TMJ disorder. TMJ disorder is something we hear about a lot, but don’t even recognize even if we are already suffering from the symptoms.

First of all, what is TMJ disorder? This is a condition affecting the temporomandibular joint, which is located on either side of the jaw. This joint plays an important role, as it works to keep your mouth and jaw operating smoothly. When the hinge is thrown out of alignment, the bones of the joint tend to scrape against one another, contributing to your TMJ pain.

Most of TMJ symptoms tend to be comparatively mild in intensity, but it would be best to address them to ease your pain and work towards a complete solution to your TMJ disorder as well. The first thing you do is figure out how to manage your pain. A good first step would be to apply warm compress to the painful areas, and getting a prescription for painkillers to help the pain go down. You should also carefully monitor how you use your mouth, from your chewing, eating, and biting. Avoid eating tough or overly chewy foods so you don’t irritate your jaw bones further. Take note of your stress levels as well. It has been shown that the more stressed people are, the more they tend to clench their teeth together, creating pressure on the jaws. As a safety precaution, you should also wear protective mouth guards while you sleep, so ensure that you don’t grind your teeth.

Of course, you should also head straight for your primary care physician and let him or her know about your condition. Your physician may be able to recommend an oral surgeon or an ENT who can diagnose you more accurately and prescribe the appropriate treatment. You may need to get an X-ray of your jaws or a bone scan. You may also need to undergo laboratory tests that will determine if you are suffering from arthritis.

TMJ disorder is painful and inconvenient, but when you learn to spot the symptoms, you are well on your way to eliminating the pain. Have the discipline to give your mouth and jaws a rest, and allow your doctor and the prescribed treatments to work with you in finding the right TMJ cure.

Exercise strengthens our body, and just about every single part of it including our jaws. Just as there are exercises for our knees, shoulders, and other joints, there are also exercises for our temporomandibular joint or simply, TMJ. TMJ is responsible for making our jaws move, controlling the opening and closing of our mouths. It also allows our jaws to move from side to side. TMJ is covered with cartilage and has a disk in it that prevents wear and tear as our jaws move. Eating gives our jaws a lot of exercise but there are other ways with which we can improve the health of our jaws.

Not all people suffer from TMJ disorder, but 5 to 15 percent of the population experience problems with their TMJs that often includes pain. TMJ exercises give us ways to beat complications that come with TMJ conditions. It is important though that we observe TMJ exercises properly to prevent further injuries.

Much like other joints in our body, we should allow our TMJ to rest when we experience soreness in it. Give your sore TMJ time to heal before you give it some exercise. Applying a warm or cold compress typically eases the pain you feel. If you feel the discomfort has subsided, you can start doing some exercises to help strengthen your jaw and the muscles surrounding it. Take extra caution when doing facial yoga exercises. Although facial yoga exercises can also improve the strength of your jaws, they can also cause harm when not done properly or when done excessively.

Before you start doing any jaw exercise or tmj treatment, try to determine the cause of your discomfort. There are TMJ disorders caused by the shifting of your teeth and this condition cannot be treated by facial exercises. There also cases when the discomfort is stress-induced. Ask for medical advice to better determine the cause and severity of your disorder and before you apply any exercise or treatment for your jaw.

There are lots of reasons to exercise your TMJ regularly. One could be to improve the strength of your TMJ and your jaw to help keep you from having TMJ disorders. Remember to take necessary caution while doing your exercises, especially when you start to feel pain.

TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint disorder and having this condition is something that one should take seriously. A person who has TMJ condition experiences pain attacks in the upper and lower jaw bones – something that can become very inconvenient. It is vital that one should take charge of this condition by learning more about the treatment of TMJ.

Various methods of TMJ treatment are available. However, several patients are frustrated with TMJ solutions. They either find themselves with aggravated symptoms or they simply do not find the kind of relief they have expected from such cures. Sometimes, patients forget that not every TMJ treatment works for everybody. There are also those who improperly apply the TMJ cure they have resorted to. And others have not chosen the kind of treatment that is appropriate to their condition. The last happens a lot when a patient is misdiagnosed and is given a totally different or wrong remedy, oftentimes resulting to even more difficulties.

A misdiagnosis of TMJ can happen when the doctor a person has sought advice from is not an expert in the said condition. Getting a second, and even a third, opinion also helps in assessing the methods of treatment that one would choose.

In the treatment of TMJ disorder, it is best to select non-invasive procedures. Have your condition double checked as it might not require surgery and heavy medication. Resort to surgery and heavy medication when there are no other means alleviate it but an invasive one. Remember, some invasive solutions are irreversible and can cause more harm when unsuccessful.

One non-invasive solution you can try is exercise. Jaw massage and jaw exercises can help relieve the pain you feel. You can start with gently opening and closing your mouth then moving your jaws from one side to another. If you choose to follow specific exercises, you can always ask help from your doctor.

Another natural way of dealing with TMJ disorder is eating the right food. Sticking to a soft diet is a possible treatment. A soft diet keeps you from using your jaws excessively. Avoiding chewing gum also helps.

Managing TMJ disorder can be difficult, especially when you experience a lot of stress. It is also possible that a TMJ condition results from stress. There are lots of ways to fight stress, including stress reduction classes and simply reminding yourself to relax when stressful situations come your way.

Reducing stress to relieve TMJ pain is the main stay of TMJ treatment. It is understood that if your stress levels are unmanageable, you are putting your wellbeing at a great risk. Stress is the main cause of TMJ disorder as one tends to clench one’s teeth when under stress. Hence, the goal of stress management is to bring your life back into balance. Learning to adopt a positive attitude, and changing the way you handle stress goes a long way in reducing TMJ problems. It also helps you think clearly, function effectively, and have fun in life. So, learn to take charge of stress.

Managing stress is all about taking charge of your life: taking charge of the way you think, the way you deal with your environment, and the way you handle your problems. Are you an overextended mother or a ‘Type A’ personality? Are you a self- critical perfectionist? Are you the chronic worrier? Are you always rushing around building up frenzy? If yes, then these stress management tips are for you.

1.	Learn to say ‘no’. This saves you a lot of stress. You should know your limits and respect them. Do not take on more than you can handle.
2.	Avoid those people who stress you out. If you can not totally avoid them, reduce the amount of time you spend with them. If possible end those relationships that are a cause of consistent stress.
3.	Learn to be in control of your environment. If the news on the television makes you anxious, don’t watch it. If the traffic stresses you out, change your route. If you hate shopping, shop online. Just avoid environmental stressors.
4.	Everyone has some hot-button topics. Avoid these. If religion or politics gets your goat, don’t discuss these topics. Avoid discussions with people who are argumentative.
5.	Cut down your to-do list. Look at your schedule analytically. Understand your responsibilities. If you have too much to handle, drop those tasks that are not really urgent.
6.	If someone or something is bothering you, communicate it to the concerned person. Learn to express your feelings. Do not bottle them up. Avoid building up any resentment.
7.	If you want others to change their behavior, then be willing to change your behavior first. By bending a little, you can find a middle ground to rest your stress.

Besides these stress relieving tips, for your TMJ treatment you should also consult a dentist to see if your teeth are properly aligned. You should try and eliminate caffeine and sugar from your diet. You should also learn to relax your jaw through the day. This is the crux of TMJ treatment.

TMJ treatment refers to the treatment undertaken to relieve TMJ symptoms. What is TMJ? For most people TMJ manifests as a literal pain in the neck. Other TMJ symptoms include headache, ear-ache, popping sounds, clicking sounds, toothache, and difficult extension of the jaw. Sometimes TMJ causes constant aching and soreness; at other times it is the reason for a sharp pain. TMJ disorders are the problems of the jaw muscles, and the temporo-mandibular joint. Temporo- mandibular joint is the joint at the side of the head that joins the mandible or the lower jaw to the temporal bone of the skull.

Causes Of TMJ

There are many causes of TMJ, but generally the condition is caused by malfunctioning of the muscles that chew the food, the teeth, and the temporo – mandibular joint. TMJ generally follows trauma, whiplash, stress, teeth grinding, teeth clenching, misaligned teeth, missing teeth, sore teeth, muscle over-use, infection, and some diseases of the joints. The pain occurs when the face and jaw muscles go into spasm. The level of this pain varies from time to time and from individual to individual.

Diagnosing TMJ

It is not very easy to diagnose TMJ. The therapist needs to understand the two inch area just in front of the ear, like the palm of his hand. This area houses the TM joint, sinuses, glands, the middle and inner ears, throat tissues, brain tissues, muscles, ligaments, nerves, arteries, veins, lymphatic tissues, bones and teeth. Most of the times TMJ is encountered in the form of ‘referred pain’! Referred pain occurs when the pain felt in one area of the body has its origin in another area. Like you may visit your doctor for an earache and find out that a decayed tooth is the actual cause of the pain.

Treating TMJ

The TMJ treatment may be done by a family dentist, physician, orthodontist, chiropractor, psychologist or oral surgeon. As TMJ develops when the joints move out of alignment, it causes a bad bite. The teeth do not mesh properly and grinding of food becomes a chore. This poor alignment is bad for the joint, so TMJ patients face difficulty in eating. Chewing becomes a painful task.

There are quite a few dentists who rely upon antioxidants to treat TMJ symptoms. Antioxidants have proven to be very effective for TMJ. Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Vitamin B, Omega-3 essential fatty acids, Gamma linolenic acid, and calcium are all helpful supplements in TMJ treatment.

For TMJ to work and be effective a combination of various treatments should be employed. Some TMJ exercises should be incorporated in daily routine. These exercises are easy to do and can be done at home. The TMJ treatment must be holistic and inclusive.

TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) treatment has become very common throughout the United States in recent times. TMJ helps in connecting the skull bone to the lower jaw. This joint comes into play every time we chew, swallow, or speak. Thus it is the most used joint in our body. How can you locate your TMJ? Try placing a finger in front of your ear. You will find a little bump there. Try opening and closing your mouth a few times. Your finger will feel the movement of your TMJ. The term TMJ is not just an abbreviated form of the name for this joint; it also indicates the joint disorders. There are millions of people who suffer from TMJ symptoms in one form or the other. However, most people do not take this affliction seriously. It is only when the disorder becomes chronic and debilitating do people wake up from their lethargy. Then they go about looking for TMJ treatment.

Factors Leading To TMJ Disorders

•	Habitual clenching and grinding of the teeth places an extra stress on the cartilage of this joint
•	Chewing gum for a long time, on a regular basis has the same effect
•	Any repetitive motion of this joint that does not let the joint rest
•	An improper bite that makes the joint work hard
•	Chewing from only one side of the mouth
•	Poor posture
•	Stress, fatigue, and unhealthy diet habits
•	Arthritis
•	Structural joint problems
•	Fractures

TMJ Treatment Options

TMJ treatment is based on finding ways to eliminate those factors that put pressure or stress on this joint. The treatment options typically include medication, dental treatment, and surgery. An over-the-counter pain reliever usually takes care of the pain. If the pain is severe a prescription of anti-inflammatory medicine may be the right option. People who are accustomed to grinding teeth or clenching jaws get benefited by a dental appliance such as a biteplate. Sometimes surgery is the only option. However, it is always the last resort.

Most of the available TMJ treatment is complex and invasive. The very thought unnerves people. But there are a number of simple treatments that are equally effective. The type of treatment always depends upon particular characteristics of each individual’s symptoms. Since the ability to talk, eat, and hear get affected due to this disorder, people become desperate for a cure.

There are some TMJ exercises that help strengthen the jaw and tongue muscles. These exercises re-align the jaw naturally. This form of treatment costs nothing and the success rate is very high. The convenience of doing these exercises at home cannot be over-looked.

Have you heard about the TMJ treatment and wondered what it was all about? Well, TMJ does not stand for “too much junk”. In fact it refers to the temporomandibular joint. Each of us has a couple of temporomandibular joints, one on both sides of the head, just below the ear. They connect the mandible to the skull. We put the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in action each time we open our mouth, swallow, chew or talk. Some people, unfortunately have disorders of the temporomandibular joint and TMJ refers to the disorders of the temporomandibular joint.

TMJ Causes

The causes of TMJ are not very specific. However, certain factors associated with TMJ disorders are enumerated below:-

•	A blow to the jaw
•	Arthritis or any other inflammation
•	Misalignment of the jaws
•	The degeneration of the joints
•	Habitual clenching of the teeth while in stress
•	Constantly chewing gum
•	Improper bite
•	Bad posture
•	Cancer
•	Infections
•	Muscle abuse
•	Accidents can cause this disorder too.

Stress and anxiety can also cause and aggravate the disorder.

A Few Common TMJ Symptoms

•	Mild to severe pain in the facial muscles that can radiate to the neck and shoulders
•	Pain while eating, chewing or talking
•	Sore jaws, cheeks
•	Headaches
•	Toothaches
•	Difficulty in extending the jaw
•	Locked jaw
•	Popping/clicking noises
•	Ear pain
•	Ringing in the ears
•	Hearing loss
•	Swelling of the affected area
•	Biting becoming uncomfortable and uneven as teeth do not fit right.

TMJ Diagnosis And Treatment

You need to consult a physician if you are experiencing any of these TMJ symptoms. The sooner the TMJ treatment is started the better it is. TMJ Dallas is one of the right places to look for expert and qualified physicians who will examine and conduct certain tests before commencing the TMJ treatment plan that goes according to your condition. The physician may ask you for an X-ray or a CT scan or an MRI scan before diagnosing the condition. He shall then commence the appropriate treatment as per your investigation reports.

TMJ treatment may involve surgical or non-surgical procedures as deemed fit. Based on the severity of the disorder, the treatment may involve sessions primarily with the dentist and then perhaps with other specialists such as neurologists, psychiatrists and physiotherapists.

Follow up care after the treatment is just as essential. You need to take extra precautions to ensure that nothing aggravates the situation. Once you have begun with the TMJ treatment, it is essential that you follow the physician’s recommendations carefully.

There are a number of treatments available for those suffering from TMJ, or Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome. Your symptoms may not be severe enough to require surgery. If surgery is not needed, there still are things that can help ease the pain. These treatment options can be applied at home. TMJ treatments should be reversible whenever possible, meaning that the treatment should not have a permanent effect on your jaw. For example:

Anti-inflammatory pain medications such as Aspirin, Tylenol, or Ibuprofen may help ease the TMJ pain for those that do not have severe TMJ symptoms. This works best if it is needed for a short period of time. If it is seen as a long-term solution, a different TMJ treatment is probably right for you.

A diet of soft foods can help ease the pain of TMJ by decreasing the strain put on the jaw. For those that don’t experience a lot of pain outside of chewing, a simple change in diet may help alleviate some pain.

Warm compresses applied to the area of TMJ pain are affective in lowering the symptoms. A good way to ease the pain is by first applying this warm compress for twenty minutes, then moving the lower jaw from side to side. This should be repeated for 3—5 times a day, for 5 days a week, for at least 2—4 weeks. This is for people who need a little more than an anti-inflammatory medication.

Nightguards can be worn for TMJ treatment. However, avoid using over-the-counter ones. If the nightguard is not fitted to your jaw it could cause more pain than you are already experiencing or permanently shift your bite. People should consult a doctor at this point to determine if this is right for them.

Prescription medications can help alleviate the pain when over-the-counter anti-inflammatory ones are insufficient for your TMJ treatment. Check with your doctor to see if this is right for you.

Though many people have TMJ, the full TMJ disorder occurs in only a few. This is because the joint has had time to rest when you are unable to chew. If your condition worsens seek professional medical TMJ treatment. Because TMJ is comprised of muscles, blood supplies, nerves, and bones, it can cross boundaries over several health-care disciplines. Ask your doctor to refer you to the specialist that is right for your condition.
