If you are suffering from chronic recurring headaches, then you may have TMJ syndrome. During the 1970’s, the condition was wildly misdiagnosed, but recent new imaging techniques, such as MRI’s have made diagnosis easier by allowing a better look inside the affected facial joint.

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint syndrome or temporal mandibular joint dysfunction. The condition has not yet been fully understood as to what the direct cause or causes are. But it usually occurs when the joints have become worn down by constant grinding of the teeth during sleep(bruxism), become abnormally shaped due to a trauma, have a misaligned bite, have worn braces for an extended period of time, or have osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. With other patients, the causes have not yet been established accordingly. Migraine sets in when the constant clenching of the jaw causes abnormal muscle spasms in the temples.

Symptoms of TMJ are: pain in and around the ear and jaw area, stiffness and/or swelling of the jaw and face, a clicking sound when the jaw is opened and closed, discomfort when chewing, spasms making the jaw lock when opened, and finally headaches.

Tests by a doctor involves studying sleeping habits, as well as grinding habits in general, a thorough examination of the jaw by way of X-rays, CT scan or an MRI , and blood tests for rheumatoid arthritis. If teeth problems are the cause, a visit to an orthodontist who specializes in TMJ treatment should be made.

Headaches may be lessened when TMJ is treated accordingly. Below are some treatments to consider which may done one at a time or in combination to have the best results to help reduce pain.
Overuse of jaw muscles. Avoid eating chewing gum, chewy candy and food that are hard to to chew, as this gives undue stress to the joints.

Dental Repairs. Have dental work done to correct an overbite, filing down and repairing of misaligned teeth.

Appliances. The dentist may make a special bite plate or splint to be worn at night to help in teeth alignment, and a night guard appliance to help stop grinding.

Medications. Treatment by heat application, anti-inflammatory medicines, and muscle relaxants may be prescribed. If the case is somewhat severe, steroids may be used for a short period. The drug Elavil may be taken when spasms of the jaw muscles contribute to the problem.

Surgery. When all else fails, surgery is the last option to help alleviate pain, and to repair the badly damaged joints.

In retrospect, prevention, though minimal, still plays an important part in cases of migraine headaches and TMJ. As the saying goes “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure” rings true.

TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint disorder and having this condition is something that one should take seriously. Resort to surgery and heavy medication when there are no other means alleviate it but an invasive one. Remember, some invasive solutions are irreversible and can cause more harm when unsuccessful.

One non-invasive solution you can try is exercise. Jaw massage and jaw exercises can help relieve the pain you feel. You can start with gently opening and closing your mouth then moving your jaws from one side to another. If you choose to follow specific exercises, you can always ask help from your doctor.

Another natural way of dealing with TMJ disorder is eating the right food. Sticking to a soft diet is a possible treatment. A soft diet keeps you from using your jaws excessively. Avoiding chewing gum also helps.

Managing TMJ disorder can be difficult, especially when you experience a lot of stress. It is also possible that a TMJ condition results from stress. There are lots of ways to fight stress, including stress reduction classes and simply reminding yourself to relax when stressful situations come your way.

Reducing stress to relieve TMJ pain is the main stay of TMJ treatment. It is understood that if your stress levels are unmanageable, you are putting your wellbeing at a great risk. Stress is the main cause of TMJ disorder as one tends to clench one’s teeth when under stress. Hence, the goal of stress management is to bring your life back into balance. Learning to adopt a positive attitude, and changing the way you handle stress goes a long way in reducing TMJ problems. It also helps you think clearly, function effectively, and have fun in life. So, learn to take charge of stress.

Managing stress is all about taking charge of your life: taking charge of the way you think, the way you deal with your environment, and the way you handle your problems. Are you an overextended mother or a ‘Type A’ personality? Are you a self- critical perfectionist? Are you the chronic worrier? Are you always rushing around building up frenzy? If yes, then these stress management tips are for you.

1.	Learn to say ‘no’. This saves you a lot of stress. You should know your limits and respect them. Do not take on more than you can handle.
2.	Avoid those people who stress you out. If you can not totally avoid them, reduce the amount of time you spend with them. If possible end those relationships that are a cause of consistent stress.
3.	Learn to be in control of your environment. If the news on the television makes you anxious, don’t watch it. If the traffic stresses you out, change your route. If you hate shopping, shop online. Just avoid environmental stressors.
4.	Everyone has some hot-button topics. Avoid these. If religion or politics gets your goat, don’t discuss these topics. Avoid discussions with people who are argumentative.
5.	Cut down your to-do list. Look at your schedule analytically. Understand your responsibilities. If you have too much to handle, drop those tasks that are not really urgent.
6.	If someone or something is bothering you, communicate it to the concerned person. Learn to express your feelings. Do not bottle them up. Avoid building up any resentment.
7.	If you want others to change their behavior, then be willing to change your behavior first. By bending a little, you can find a middle ground to rest your stress.

Besides these stress relieving tips, for your TMJ treatment you should also consult a dentist to see if your teeth are properly aligned. You should try and eliminate caffeine and sugar from your diet. You should also learn to relax your jaw through the day. This is the crux of TMJ treatment.

The best option of TMJ treatment is TMJ prevention. So how does one avoid TMJ? To understand that we need to understand what is TMJ. The TMJ or the Temporo-mandibular joint connects the temporal bone of the skull to the lower jaw or the mandible. There is one such joint on each side of the head. It is located right in front of each ear. This joint comes into play every time a person swallows food, chews food, talks, or yawns. All these activities make this joint the most exercised joint of our body. The term TMJ is also used to refer to TMJ joint disorders.

To understand the ways to avoid TMJ, we must first know what causes TMJ. Most people do not know the cause of their TMJ. Some of them have TMJ symptoms which are quite mild and do not interfere with their lives. But generally the symptoms are quite severe, and are caused by following conditions:

1.	Bruxism or grinding of teeth
2.	Mandibular opening deviation
3.	Jaw muscle spasm
4.	Wearing worn out dentures
5.	Unusual movements of the neck

So far even the doctors do not know how to permanently cure TMJ. Most of the TMJ treatment revolves around controlling symptoms and pain alleviation. Greater the pain, stronger the pain killer! Generally your body gets immune to these pain killers and after a while even the so-called strong pain killers stop working. So, what is the prevention for TMJ?

1.	Change your diet habits. Include fresh fruits and vegetables to get more magnesium.
2.	Consult a physical therapist who will correct your posture.
3.	Do yoga every day.
4.	Avoid stress.
5.	Do TMJ exercises.

If you already suffer from TMJ, try these steps to ease the symptoms, without any medication:

1.	Eat soft foods.
2.	Apply ice packs.
3.	Avoid wide yawning, loud singing, and gum chewing.
4.	Learn stress reducing and relaxing techniques.
5.	Practice gentle jaw stretches.

The TMJ disorders pose many challenges to the medical community. Since pain is the main TMJ symptom, a lot of research is being done to understand this process, such as:

1.	What is common between TMJ and other muscular pains?
2.	How do men and women differ in their response to TMJ pain?
3.	What are the factors that lead to chronic TMJ pain?
4.	How do stressors like noise, cold, and physical stress affect TMJ pain?
5.	Is there any link between osteoarthritis and TMJ pain?

These questions have baffled the medical scientists for quite a while now, so the answers to these questions will help bring in effective TMJ treatment.

Have you heard about the TMJ treatment and wondered what it was all about? Well, TMJ does not stand for “too much junk”. In fact it refers to the temporomandibular joint. Each of us has a couple of temporomandibular joints, one on both sides of the head, just below the ear. They connect the mandible to the skull. We put the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in action each time we open our mouth, swallow, chew or talk. Some people, unfortunately have disorders of the temporomandibular joint and TMJ refers to the disorders of the temporomandibular joint.

TMJ Causes

The causes of TMJ are not very specific. However, certain factors associated with TMJ disorders are enumerated below:-

•	A blow to the jaw
•	Arthritis or any other inflammation
•	Misalignment of the jaws
•	The degeneration of the joints
•	Habitual clenching of the teeth while in stress
•	Constantly chewing gum
•	Improper bite
•	Bad posture
•	Cancer
•	Infections
•	Muscle abuse
•	Accidents can cause this disorder too.

Stress and anxiety can also cause and aggravate the disorder.

A Few Common TMJ Symptoms

•	Mild to severe pain in the facial muscles that can radiate to the neck and shoulders
•	Pain while eating, chewing or talking
•	Sore jaws, cheeks
•	Headaches
•	Toothaches
•	Difficulty in extending the jaw
•	Locked jaw
•	Popping/clicking noises
•	Ear pain
•	Ringing in the ears
•	Hearing loss
•	Swelling of the affected area
•	Biting becoming uncomfortable and uneven as teeth do not fit right.

TMJ Diagnosis And Treatment

You need to consult a physician if you are experiencing any of these TMJ symptoms. The sooner the TMJ treatment is started the better it is. TMJ Dallas is one of the right places to look for expert and qualified physicians who will examine and conduct certain tests before commencing the TMJ treatment plan that goes according to your condition. The physician may ask you for an X-ray or a CT scan or an MRI scan before diagnosing the condition. He shall then commence the appropriate treatment as per your investigation reports.

TMJ treatment may involve surgical or non-surgical procedures as deemed fit. Based on the severity of the disorder, the treatment may involve sessions primarily with the dentist and then perhaps with other specialists such as neurologists, psychiatrists and physiotherapists.

Follow up care after the treatment is just as essential. You need to take extra precautions to ensure that nothing aggravates the situation. Once you have begun with the TMJ treatment, it is essential that you follow the physician’s recommendations carefully.
